How to get from Hurghada to Luxor
Hurghada and Luxor are linked by road only, about 300 km via Safaga and Qena, roughly 4 h to 4 h 30. Most visitors go on an organised tour or a private transfer; intercity coaches run too and are much cheaper. There is no train from Hurghada and no regular direct flight.
Best option: Car. A private transfer or organised tour is the most comfortable way, picking you up at your hotel and handling the road checkpoints.

Tips
- Day tours leave around 4 or 5 am to beat the heat and the crowds at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.
- Carry your passport; tourist vehicles are checked at police posts.
- Bring water and sun protection, as the Luxor sites have little shade.
- Driving yourself is not common for visitors; a car with a local driver is the usual choice.
Common questions
Is there a train from Hurghada to Luxor?
No. Hurghada is not on the Egyptian railway network, so there is no train to Luxor. The only practical connection is by road, about 300 km via Safaga and Qena. Most visitors use an organised tour or a private transfer, and there are also a few intercity coaches a day, which are much cheaper.
Can I do Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada?
Yes, many agencies run day trips, leaving around 4 or 5 am and returning late in the evening. You typically see Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and one or two other sites. With about 4 h each way it is tiring, and a night in Luxor lets you see far more, including Luxor Temple at night.
Can I fly from Hurghada to Luxor?
There is no regular direct flight between the two cities; domestic flights generally connect through Cairo, which takes much longer than the road. In practice everyone goes by road. If you want to avoid a long drive, consider spending a few nights in Luxor or joining a Nile cruise from there.
Is it safe to travel by road from Hurghada to Luxor?
The route is used daily by tourist vehicles, and police checkpoints are part of the trip. Travelling with a licensed agency or a reputable transfer company is the norm. Check your government's current travel advice before you go, carry your passport, and avoid driving yourself at night, when the desert road is poorly lit.
