Tips

Common questions

Is there a ferry from Honolulu to Maui?

No. There is no passenger ferry between Oahu and Maui. The Hawaii Superferry closed in 2009. Flying is the only practical option, with many flights a day taking about 40 minutes. A local ferry does run between Maui and Lanai, but not to Oahu.

How much does the flight cost?

Usually about $60–180 one way, depending on the airline, season and how early you book. Hawaiian Airlines and at times other carriers such as Southwest fly the route, so fares can be competitive. Checked baggage fees apply on some fares, so compare the total cost before booking.

Can I do Maui as a day trip from Honolulu?

It is possible with early and late flights, but you would have only a few hours to see Maui and would need a rental car. Maui's main sights, such as Haleakalā and the Road to Hana, each take most of a day. Several nights are better.

Do I need to book ahead?

Yes, for the best fares. Flights fill up at holidays and weekends. Also book rental cars on Maui early, as they can be expensive and scarce in peak season. Haleakalā sunrise visits require advance reservations through the national park system.
