Common questions
Is there a direct bus?
Yes. First-class companies such as Primera Plus and ETN run buses from Guadalajara's Nueva Central Camionera to San Miguel de Allende, taking about 5–6 hours. There are several departures a day. Check current schedules and book online for the best seats.
How long is the drive?
About 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours on toll highways via León or Querétaro. Tolls are significant but the roads are good. Drive in daylight and keep to the main toll highways. Parking in San Miguel's historic centre is limited, so look for hotel parking.
Is there a train?
No. There is no passenger train between Guadalajara and San Miguel de Allende. Mexico's long-distance passenger rail network is limited, and this route is served by buses and roads. Flying to León or Querétaro and continuing by road is possible but rarely faster than the bus.
Can I do it as a day trip?
No. With about 5 hours each way, a day trip is not practical. San Miguel's colonial centre, markets and nearby hot springs deserve at least two or three nights. It also combines well with Guanajuato, about 1 hour 30 minutes away by road.
