Common questions

How long is the drive?

From Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, about 450 km and 4 h 30–5 h via Williams, Kingman and the Hoover Dam bypass. The West Rim, home of the Skywalk, is closer, about 2 h 30 from Las Vegas, but it is a different area run by the Hualapai Tribe.

Is there a bus or train?

There is no scheduled public bus or train between the South Rim and Las Vegas. Coach tours run from Las Vegas, mostly as same-day return trips. The Grand Canyon Railway runs from Williams to the South Rim, which can be combined with a drive.

Can I do it as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Yes, many tours do, but the South Rim means about 9–10 hours of travel. The West Rim is a more manageable day trip. For sunrise or sunset at the South Rim, stay overnight in the park or in Tusayan.

Is there a time difference?

Sometimes. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, while Nevada uses Pacific Time with daylight saving. From roughly March to early November, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas show the same time. In winter, Arizona is one hour ahead of Las Vegas. Keep this in mind for tour pickups, sunset times and park ranger programmes.
