Tips
- Book Advance train tickets as early as possible; walk-up fares are much higher.
- A Railcard (for example the 16–25 or Two Together) cuts most fares by a third.
- Sit on the right going south for views of the Lune Gorge and the Lake District fells.
- Avoid driving the M6 around Preston and Warrington at Friday rush hour.
Common questions
Is there a direct train from Glasgow to Manchester?
Yes. TransPennine Express runs direct trains from Glasgow Central to Manchester, roughly every two hours, taking about 3 h 15–3 h 30. You can also take Avanti West Coast and change at Preston, which gives more departure times. Check the current timetable for weekend engineering works.
What is the cheapest way from Glasgow to Manchester?
The coach, at about £15–40, is usually cheapest but slowest at 4 h 30–5 h. Advance train tickets booked weeks ahead can be similarly cheap and much faster. Driving is good value for two or more people, but city-centre parking in Manchester adds to the cost.
Is it worth flying from Glasgow to Manchester?
Rarely. The flight is about an hour, but with airport check-in, security and transfers into Manchester you spend 3–4 hours door to door, which is the same as the direct train from city centre to city centre. Flying only makes sense if you are connecting to a flight at Manchester Airport.
Do I need to book the train ahead?
You do not have to, but you should if price matters. Advance fares are much cheaper and are released about 12 weeks before travel. Walk-up Anytime fares can be over £100 one way. On Fridays and Sundays trains are busy, so a seat reservation is worth having.
