Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Évora to Sintra?

No. You take an Intercidades train from Évora to Lisbon, about 1 h 30, then change to a suburban train on the Sintra line, which runs every 15–30 minutes and takes about 40 minutes. Total time is about 3–3 h 30. Check current timetables, as Évora trains run only a few times a day.

How long does it take to drive from Évora to Sintra?

About 2 hours for roughly 170 km via the A6 and A2, crossing the Tagus into Lisbon and continuing west. Expect tolls of roughly €15–20. Traffic around Lisbon at rush hour can add time. Parking in Sintra is limited, so park at the edge of town and use local buses to the palaces.

What is the cheapest way from Évora to Sintra?

A Rede Expressos coach to Lisbon followed by a suburban train to Sintra, roughly €12–20 in total. The train via Lisbon costs a little more but is similar in time. Buying coach tickets online in advance can save a few euros. Driving is only cheaper for a group, given tolls and fuel.

Can I visit Sintra as a day trip from Évora?

It is possible, but with about 3 hours each way you would have only a few hours for the palaces. A better plan is to stay a night in Sintra or Lisbon, visit the palaces early before the crowds and continue from there. Book palace entry times online in advance.
