How to get from Elafonisos to Mani
Elafonisos is linked to the mainland by a short car ferry of about 10 minutes from Pounta, and from there it is about 1 h 45–2 h by road to Areopoli in the Mani, via Gytheio. Public transport is patchy, so a car is by far the easiest way.
Best option: Car. A car with the short ferry gets you there in about two hours, while buses need several changes and run infrequently.
All the ways to make the trip
| How | Time | How often | Price* | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| car Small car ferry Elafonisos–Pounta, then the road via Molai and Gytheio to Areopoli | about 2 h including the ferry | ferry roughly every 30–60 minutes in summer, less often in winter | fuel plus about €10–15 for a car and driver on the ferry | The ferry is a small open boat; summer queues at Pounta can mean a wait. Gytheio is the last large town for fuel and shopping before the Mani. |
| bus Ferry to Pounta, then KTEL Lakonias buses with changes (for example via Neapoli, Molai or Sparta) to Gytheio and on to Areopoli | most of a day | a few buses a day on each leg, fewer in winter | about €15–25 | Connections are not timed to each other; check current timetables with KTEL Lakonias. |
| taxi Taxi from Pounta or Neapoli to the Mani | about 1 h 45 | on demand | about €100–150 | Book in advance; there are few taxis in the area. |

Common questions
How do I get from Elafonisos to the Mani?
Take the short car ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta on the mainland, about 10 minutes, then drive via Molai and Gytheio to Areopoli, the gateway to the Mani. The whole trip takes about two hours. Without a car it is possible by bus but needs several changes.
Is there a bus from Elafonisos to the Mani?
There is no direct bus. KTEL Lakonias buses run from the Neapoli area to Molai and Sparta, and from there to Gytheio and Areopoli, but connections are limited and not coordinated. Expect most of a day and check current timetables. A rental car or taxi is much simpler.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes, by car. At about two hours each way you can visit Gytheio, Areopoli and the Diros caves and be back on Elafonisos in the evening. Check the last ferry from Pounta back to the island, which leaves earlier outside summer, and allow for slow driving on the winding roads south of Gytheio.
Do I need to book the Elafonisos ferry?
No, the ferry is a simple shuttle and you pay on board or at the quay. In July and August queues for cars can be long at peak times, so allow extra time or travel early in the morning. Services are less frequent in winter.
