Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct boat from Elafonisos to Kythira?

There is no regular direct passenger service. The usual route is the short crossing from Elafonisos to Pounta, a drive to Neapoli, and then the car ferry to Diakofti on Kythira. In summer some excursion boats may run, but check locally.

How long does the ferry take?

The Neapoli–Kythira ferry takes about an hour. Including the short Elafonisos crossing and the drive to Neapoli, plan about 2 to 3 hours in total. Waiting times depend on the ferry schedule, so check current timetables before you leave. The car ferry is the main link to the island.

Can I take my car?

Yes. Both the Elafonisos boat and the Neapoli–Kythira ferry carry cars. Having a car on Kythira is very useful, as the island is large and public transport is limited. The Elafonisos crossing takes about 10 minutes, and the Neapoli–Kythira ferry about an hour.

Do I need to book?

In July and August, book your car on the Neapoli–Kythira ferry in advance. The small Elafonisos boats do not need booking but there may be queues on busy days. Arrive at Neapoli at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure with a car.
