Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Edinburgh to Manchester?

Yes. TransPennine Express runs direct trains from Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Piccadilly, some continuing to Manchester Airport, in about three hours and fifteen minutes. They run roughly every two hours; other times need a change at Preston. Weekend engineering works sometimes mean buses on part of the route, so check before you travel.

What is the cheapest way from Edinburgh to Manchester?

Coaches are usually cheapest, from about £15 one way, but they take six hours or more. Advance train tickets booked several weeks ahead can be close in price and are twice as fast. A railcard, if you qualify, takes a third off most rail fares.

How long is the drive from Edinburgh to Manchester?

About four hours for roughly 350 km, using the A702 and M74 to Carlisle and then the M6 south. There are no tolls on the usual route. Traffic around Preston and the approach to Manchester can be heavy at rush hour, and winter weather can affect the high stretches near Shap.

Do I need to book the train ahead?

You can buy on the day, but walk-up fares are much higher. Advance tickets for a specific train are cheapest and usually go on sale about twelve weeks before travel. Seat reservations are free and worth having on Friday and Sunday afternoons, when trains are busy.
