Tips

Common questions

How long is the bus from Dubrovnik to Mostar?

About 3 to 4 hours, including the border crossing between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Summer queues at the border can add time. There are a few departures a day, more in summer. Buy tickets at Dubrovnik bus station in Gruž or online, and check the current timetable.

Can I do a day trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar?

Yes, by organised tour or rental car. Tours often combine Mostar with Počitelj and the Kravica waterfalls and make for a long day of about 12 hours. By bus, the timetable leaves little time in Mostar, so an overnight stay is a better plan.

Can I take a rental car from Croatia to Bosnia?

Usually yes, but tell the rental company in advance. Most allow Bosnia and Herzegovina for an extra fee and provide the insurance document needed at the border. Driving without permission can void your insurance. Allow for border waits in summer.

Is there a train from Dubrovnik to Mostar?

No. Dubrovnik has no railway station. Mostar does have trains, but only on the line towards Sarajevo. From Dubrovnik your options are bus, car, transfer or an organised tour. For most independent travellers the bus is the simplest and cheapest choice, with tickets sold at the Gruž bus station.
