How to get from Chefchaouen to Ronda
Chefchaouen to Ronda means crossing the Strait of Gibraltar: a bus or taxi to Tangier, a ferry to Tarifa or Algeciras, and then a bus or the Renfe train from Algeciras to Ronda. Plan on a long day of about 9–11 h door to door.
Best option: Ferry. The ferry across the Strait is the only practical surface link, and combining it with the Algeciras–Ronda train is the most reliable route.
All the ways to make the trip
| How | Time | How often | Price* | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ferry Bus or grand taxi Chefchaouen–Tangier (about 2 h 30–3 h), then ferry Tangier Ville–Tarifa (about 1 h) or Tanger Med–Algeciras (about 1 h 30), then onward to Ronda | about 9–11 h in total | ferries many times a day; onward connections a few times a day | about €40–70 for the ferry, plus €15–40 for buses and trains | FRS and Baleària sail Tangier Ville–Tarifa; Tarifa passengers get a free bus to Algeciras with some tickets. Strong Levante winds can cancel sailings; check on the day. |
| train Renfe train from Algeciras to Ronda, after the ferry | about 1 h 40–2 h | a few trains a day | about €12–20 | Scenic single-track line through the Serranía de Ronda; check the timetable before choosing your ferry, as trains are infrequent. |

Tips
- Start early in Chefchaouen; the first leg to Tangier is the slowest part of the day.
- Passport control at Tangier Ville is done in the port; arrive at least an hour before the ferry.
- If the Levante wind is blowing, Tarifa sailings may move to Algeciras or be cancelled.
- Spain is often one hour ahead of Morocco (in Spanish summer time and during Ramadan); check the time difference on your travel day when matching connections.
Common questions
How do I get from Chefchaouen to Ronda?
Take a bus or grand taxi to Tangier, a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to Tarifa or Algeciras, and then a bus or train to Ronda. The Renfe train from Algeciras is the easiest final leg. Allow 9–11 hours in total and build in spare time for the border and possible weather delays.
Which ferry should I take, Tarifa or Algeciras?
From Tangier Ville port, in the city, ferries go to Tarifa in about an hour. From Tanger Med, about 45 km east of Tangier, larger ferries go to Algeciras. Algeciras has the train to Ronda, but Tarifa sailings are quicker and some include a bus to Algeciras. Check current schedules.
Can I take a rental car from Morocco to Spain?
Usually not. Most rental companies forbid taking cars between Morocco and Spain, and insurance rarely covers it. The common approach is to return your car in Tangier, cross as a foot passenger and rent another car in Tarifa or Algeciras. If you own the car, you can use the Tanger Med–Algeciras car ferry.
Do I need to book the ferry ahead?
Outside summer you can usually buy at the port, but booking online is easier. In July and August, and especially during Operation Crossing the Strait when many Moroccans abroad travel home, ferries are very busy, so book early. Weather cancellations are common in strong winds; keep the day flexible.
