Tips
- Chefchaouen bus station is about a 20-minute walk downhill from the medina; take a petit taxi with luggage.
- Sit on the right going south for views of the Rif.
- In Fez, arrange a hotel pick-up from the bus station, as medina streets are confusing.
- Carry water and snacks; stops are short.
Common questions
Is there a train from Chefchaouen to Fez?
No. Chefchaouen has no railway station. Some travellers take a taxi to a station on the Tangier line and continue by train, but it is usually slower and more complicated than the direct CTM bus or a private driver. For most people the bus is the simplest option.
How long does the bus take?
CTM buses take about 4 hours, with a short stop on the way. Departures are limited to a few a day, so check the current schedule at the bus station or on the CTM website and buy your ticket a day ahead, especially at weekends and during Moroccan holidays, when buses fill up.
Is a private driver worth it?
For a group of three or four, often yes. A private car costs roughly MAD 800–1,200, takes slightly less time than the bus, and lets you stop for photos or detour to Volubilis and Meknes. Agree the price, route and any stops clearly before setting off.
Is it safe to drive myself?
It is possible, but the roads through the Rif are narrow and winding, with slow trucks, animals and pedestrians. Drive in daylight and avoid peak holiday traffic. In Fez, leave the car in a guarded car park outside the medina, because the old town's lanes are closed to cars.
