Common questions
Is there a ferry from Chania to Kythira?
Yes, but not from Chania town itself. A conventional car ferry sails from Kissamos (Kastelli), about 40 km west of Chania, to Kythira via Antikythira, taking about four hours. It runs only a few times a week, so check the current timetable with Greek ferry booking sites before you plan the rest of your trip.
How do I get from Chania to Kissamos port?
KTEL buses run from Chania's bus station to Kissamos town several times a day in about an hour; from there the port is a short taxi ride. Driving takes about 45 minutes to an hour on the national road. With early departures, staying the night before in Kissamos is often easiest.
Can I fly from Chania to Kythira?
Not directly. You would fly from Chania to Athens and then take a domestic flight from Athens to Kythira, which runs a few times a week or more in summer. The connection usually takes most of a day and costs much more than the ferry, so it is mainly useful when no sailing fits.
Can I take my car on the ferry to Kythira?
Yes, the Kissamos–Kythira ferry is a conventional car ferry. Book the car space ahead in July and August, when vehicle space is limited. Check with your rental company that taking the car by sea is allowed, as many Cretan rental contracts exclude ferries or require written permission.
