How to get from Carcassonne to San Sebastian
Driving is the most direct way, about 4 to 4 h 30 for roughly 400 km on the A61, A64 and A63 motorways. By train, you go via Toulouse and on to Hendaye (via Pau and Bayonne), then take the Euskotren to San Sebastián, about 6 h 30 to 8 hours in total.
Best option: Car. A car is much faster than the train, which needs at least two changes.

Common questions
Is there a direct train?
No. The trip needs at least two changes: Carcassonne to Toulouse, Toulouse to Hendaye, then the Euskotren to San Sebastián. Total time is about 6 h 30 to 8 hours depending on connections. Check current timetables to make sure the legs connect.
How long is the drive?
About 4 to 4 h 30 for roughly 400 km, mostly on French motorways via Toulouse and Bayonne. Tolls in France add about €35 to €45, and there is a short toll section on the Spanish AP-8. Traffic is heavier near Bayonne and at the border in summer.
What is the cheapest way?
Buses can be cheapest if booked early, though connections are fewer. Train fares vary; book ahead for the best prices. Driving alone is expensive because of tolls and fuel, but for a group it can be cheaper. FlixBus and similar coaches usually need a change in Toulouse.
Can I do it as a day trip?
No. With at least 4 hours each way by car and more by train, a day trip is not practical. Plan to stay at least one night in San Sebastián or break the trip in Pau or Bayonne. Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are also pleasant stops.
