Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct ferry from Capri to Rome?

No. Rome is not on the coast, and there are no ferries from Capri to Rome's port. The usual route is a ferry or hydrofoil to Naples, then a high-speed train to Roma Termini. The total is about 3½ to 4 hours. In summer some ferries also run from Capri to Sorrento or Positano, but Naples is the best link for Rome.

Which Naples port do Capri ferries use?

Most fast ferries and hydrofoils arrive at Molo Beverello, near the city centre, and some slower ferries use Calata Porta di Massa next to it. From either, a taxi to Napoli Centrale station takes about 15 minutes, or you can take the metro from Municipio. Check your ticket to confirm the terminal.

Can I visit Capri as a day trip from Rome?

Yes, but it is a long day. Take an early Frecciarossa or Italo to Naples, a fast ferry to Capri, and return in the late afternoon. You would have about 4–5 hours on the island, enough for the Piazzetta, Anacapri or a boat tour. An overnight stay in Naples, Sorrento or Capri is more relaxed.

Do I need to book ahead?

High-speed train tickets between Naples and Rome are cheaper when booked early and seats are reserved. Ferry tickets can usually be bought at the port on the day, but in July and August popular sailings fill up, so booking online a day ahead is sensible. Always check current timetables in winter.
