How to get from Capri to Positano
From about April to October, direct ferries link Capri and Positano in about 30 to 50 minutes. In winter there is no direct boat: take a ferry to Sorrento and then a SITA bus along the coast to Positano, about 2 h in total. Private boat transfers run any time the sea allows.
Best option: Ferry. The direct seasonal ferry is fast, cheaper than a private boat and avoids the congested Amalfi Coast road.

Tips
- Take an early boat to Capri; the island is busiest between 10:00 and 16:00.
- Check the last ferry back before you go; afternoon boats sell out in summer.
- Positano's ferry pier is at the beach, at the bottom of the town; be ready for stairs with luggage.
- Rough seas can cancel boats at short notice; have a plan B via Sorrento.
Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Capri to Positano?
Yes, from about April to October. Direct ferries take about 30 to 50 minutes and run several times a day from Marina Grande. In winter the direct service stops, and you have to go via Sorrento and continue by SITA bus. Check current timetables, as schedules change each season and boats can be cancelled in bad weather.
Can I do a day trip from Positano to Capri?
Yes, it is one of the most popular day trips on the coast. Take the first morning ferry, spend the day on the island, and return on an afternoon boat. Buy your return ticket early in summer, as the last boats fill up quickly, and allow time for the queues at Marina Grande.
What is the cheapest way from Capri to Positano?
In summer, the direct ferry at about €25–35 is the cheapest and fastest. Out of season, the ferry to Sorrento plus a SITA bus costs a similar amount but takes up to two and a half hours. A private boat costs several hundred euros, which only makes sense for a group.
Do I need to book the ferry ahead?
In July and August it is wise to buy tickets a day or two ahead, especially for afternoon returns. Outside peak season you can usually buy at the port on the day. Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure, as ticket queues at Marina Grande and Positano can be long.
