How to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen
ADO buses from downtown Cancún and from Cancún Airport reach Playa del Carmen in about 1 h, many times a day, for roughly MXN 100–250. Driving on Highway 307 takes about the same and has no tolls; shared vans (colectivos) are the cheapest option.
Best option: Bus. ADO buses are frequent, air-conditioned, cheap and stop in central Playa del Carmen, a few blocks from Fifth Avenue.

Common questions
How do I get from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen?
ADO buses leave from the airport terminals directly to Playa del Carmen, taking about an hour for a few hundred pesos. Private transfers and taxis take a little less time and cost much more per vehicle. The Tren Maya also has a station at the airport, but Playa's station is outside the centre, so the bus is usually simpler.
What is the cheapest way from Cancún to Playa del Carmen?
Colectivos, the white shared vans that run along Highway 307 from downtown Cancún, cost about MXN 50–60 and leave when full. ADO buses cost more but are more comfortable and have luggage space. Driving a rental car has no tolls on this route, so with a group it can also be economical.
Can I do Playa del Carmen as a day trip from Cancún?
Yes. Buses run about every 20 to 60 minutes and take about an hour, so you can spend the day on Fifth Avenue and the beach and return in the evening. From Playa you can also take a ferry to Cozumel, which makes a longer but still feasible day out.
Do I need to book the ADO bus in advance?
Usually not; you can buy tickets at the terminal shortly before departure. In peak periods such as Christmas, Easter and summer weekends, booking a few hours or a day ahead in the ADO app avoids waiting for the next bus with free seats. Airport buses can fill up when several flights land together.
