Common questions
Is there a direct train from Brașov to Sibiu?
Yes, there are a few direct trains a day, taking about 2 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the service and stops. Some departures require a change. The line runs along the Olt valley via Făgăraș. Check the current CFR timetable before travelling.
How long is the drive?
About 2 hours 30 minutes for roughly 145 km on DN1 via Făgăraș. The road is single carriageway most of the way and carries heavy truck traffic, so allow extra time. A Romanian road vignette (rovinieta) is required for all cars and can be bought online.
Can I do Sibiu as a day trip from Brașov?
It is possible, with about 2 hours 30 minutes each way by car, leaving several hours for Sibiu's old town. By train it is less practical because of the limited departures. Many visitors prefer to stay at least one night in Sibiu.
Can I drive the Transfăgărășan on the way?
Only in season, usually from about July to October, depending on snow. It is a significant detour south from DN1 and the drive over the mountain takes several hours with stops. It turns the trip into a full day. Check the road status before setting off.
