How to get from Bordeaux to San Sebastian
By train it is about 2 h 30–3 h: SNCF trains from Bordeaux Saint-Jean to Hendaye on the border, then the Euskotren "Topo" or a Renfe train into San Sebastián (Donostia). Direct coaches take about 3–3 h 30, and driving about 2 h 30 on the A63.
Best option: Train. The train to Hendaye is quick and frequent, and the onward local train is simple.

Common questions
Is there a direct train?
Not usually. French trains terminate at Hendaye on the border, and you change to the Euskotren "Topo" line or a Renfe local train to reach San Sebastián. The change is easy and the Topo runs frequently. Allow about 2 h 30–3 h in total. Check current timetables for the Bordeaux–Hendaye leg.
What is the cheapest way?
Usually a direct coach, with fares often from about €15 if booked ahead and no change on the way. TER regional trains to Hendaye can also be reasonably priced, especially with discount cards. Driving is economical only for groups because French motorway tolls add up.
Can I do it as a day trip?
It is possible: around 2 h 30–3 h each way by train or bus leaves several hours in San Sebastián for the old town and La Concha beach. For an evening of pintxos and a relaxed visit, most people stay at least one night.
Do I need my passport?
France and Spain are both in the Schengen area, so there are usually no routine border checks, but carry a passport or national ID card anyway. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, and you need ID for hotels and sometimes train tickets.
