Tips

Common questions

Is there a train from Belgrade to Mostar?

No. There is currently no passenger train between Belgrade and Sarajevo or Mostar. You can take a bus to Sarajevo and then the train from Sarajevo to Mostar, which takes about two hours, but check whether that line is running, as it has had interruptions. Otherwise buses cover the whole route.

How long is the bus from Belgrade to Mostar?

A direct bus takes about 9 to 10 hours, including the border crossing and rest stops. Going via Sarajevo takes a similar time or longer, depending on connections. Border waits can add an hour in summer. Check current timetables, as direct departures are limited, often to one or a few a day.

Can I drive a rental car from Serbia to Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Usually yes, but you need the rental company's permission and a green card insurance document valid for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many companies charge a cross-border fee and one-way drop-offs in another country are often expensive or not offered. Ask before you book.

Should I stop in Sarajevo on the way?

It is a good idea. Sarajevo lies roughly two-thirds of the way, and splitting the trip there turns a long day into two manageable ones. From Sarajevo, buses and, when running, trains reach Mostar in about two to three hours along the Neretva valley.
