Common questions
Is there a train from Auckland to Rotorua?
No. The railway line to Rotorua no longer carries passenger trains. The Northern Explorer train from Auckland to Wellington does not go via Rotorua. Your options are driving, an InterCity coach, or a short Air New Zealand flight. Driving is the most flexible and takes about 3 hours.
Can I do Rotorua as a day trip from Auckland?
It is possible by car or on an organised tour, but with about 3 hours each way it is a long day. You would have time for one geothermal park and perhaps a Māori cultural experience. Staying one night lets you see more, including an evening cultural show.
Is the bus a good option?
Yes, InterCity coaches are comfortable and affordable, taking about 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours. They leave from central Auckland several times a day. In Rotorua you will need tours or taxis to reach attractions outside town, as local buses cover only part of the area.
Should I fly?
Only if time is very tight. The flight takes about 45 minutes, but with airport transfers and check-in the total is close to driving time. Flights cost more than the coach. Flying makes sense mainly if you are connecting from an international arrival or another domestic flight.
