How to get from Alonissos to Halkidiki
There is normally no regular direct ferry from Alonissos to Halkidiki, so most travellers take a ferry or hydrofoil to Volos and continue by road via Thessaloniki. Door to door it is a full day: about 3–5 h at sea plus about 3–4 h by road, depending on which part of Halkidiki you are heading to.
Best option: Ferry. A ferry to Volos followed by a car (or buses via Thessaloniki) is the only dependable year-round link between the island and Halkidiki.
All the ways to make the trip
| How | Time | How often | Price* | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ferry Ferry or hydrofoil from Patitiri (Alonissos) to Volos, via Skopelos and Skiathos | about 3 h by hydrofoil, 4–5 h by conventional ferry | several a day in summer, far fewer in winter | about €30–60 per person | Weather can cancel hydrofoils; check current timetables. In some summers there has been a seasonal sailing towards Thessaloniki — check whether one runs before you plan. |
| car From Volos port by road north via Larissa and Thessaloniki, then on into Halkidiki | about 3 h to Kassandra, 3 h 30–4 h to Sithonia | fuel plus motorway tolls of about €15–20 | Taking a car on the ferry from Alonissos is possible on conventional ferries only; book the car space ahead in July and August. | |
| bus KTEL bus from Volos to Thessaloniki, then KTEL Chalkidikis buses from Thessaloniki to the Halkidiki resorts | about 5–6 h of bus travel including the change | several a day on both legs, more in summer | about €30–40 for both legs | The two KTEL companies use different bus stations in Thessaloniki; allow time to cross the city. |

Tips
- Take the first morning boat from Alonissos so you reach Volos in time to drive before dark.
- If the sea is rough, hydrofoils are cancelled first; conventional ferries usually still sail.
- Halkidiki is large: Kassandra is about an hour closer to Thessaloniki than Sithonia or Athos.
- In summer, buy ferry tickets online a few days ahead, especially for a car.
Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Alonissos to Halkidiki?
Not on a regular basis. The Sporades are connected to Volos, Agios Konstantinos and Mantoudi in Evia, not to Halkidiki. In some summers an operator has run a seasonal connection towards Thessaloniki, so check current timetables before you travel. Otherwise plan on a ferry to Volos and continue north by road.
How long does Alonissos to Halkidiki take?
Allow a full day. The hydrofoil to Volos takes about 3 hours and a conventional ferry 4–5 hours. From Volos it is about 3 hours by car to Kassandra and around 4 hours to Sithonia. By bus, with a change in Thessaloniki, expect 5–6 hours on land plus waiting time.
What is the cheapest way from Alonissos to Halkidiki?
A foot-passenger ticket on the conventional ferry to Volos followed by KTEL buses via Thessaloniki is the cheapest option, at roughly €60–80 in total. It is slower than driving, and the change of bus station in Thessaloniki adds time, but it needs no car and runs every day of the year.
Do I need to book the ferry ahead?
For foot passengers outside July and August you can usually buy on the day, but booking online is wise in high season. Car spaces on the conventional ferries sell out on summer weekends and around 15 August, so book a car well in advance and check the timetable again the day before.
