How to get from Aegina to Spetses
There is no reliable year-round direct boat between Aegina and Spetses. Most travellers either go back to Piraeus (about 40 min to 1 h 15) and take a high-speed boat to Spetses (about 2 h to 3 h), or use the Aegina–Methana–Poros car ferries and finish on the mainland at Kosta, where water taxis and small boats cross to Spetses. Allow 4–6 hours door to door.
Best option: Ferry. Changing boats in Piraeus is the simplest plan because Piraeus has the most daily high-speed departures to Spetses.

Tips
- Book the Piraeus–Spetses leg ahead in July and August; seats sell out on weekends.
- Leave at least 1 hour between arriving in Piraeus and the Spetses departure; Saronic boats usually leave from the gates near the Piraeus metro station, but confirm the gate on your ticket.
- Spetses has very few cars; transport on the island is on foot, by bike, scooter, horse carriage or water taxi.
- In winter connections thin out sharply; check current timetables before planning.
Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Aegina to Spetses?
Not on a regular year-round basis. In summer some Saronic high-speed boats link Aegina with Poros, from where other boats continue to Hydra and Spetses, but this varies year to year. The dependable option is to sail back to Piraeus and take one of the daily high-speed boats to Spetses. Check current timetables, as summer connections are announced in spring.
How long does the journey take?
Plan on 4 to 6 hours. Aegina to Piraeus is about 40 minutes by high-speed boat or 1 h 15 by conventional ferry, and Piraeus to Spetses about 2 to 3 hours depending on the number of stops. Add waiting time between boats. Going via Methana by car and crossing from Kosta takes a similar total time.
Can I take my car to Spetses?
No. Private cars of visitors are not allowed on Spetses. If you drive, take the car ferry from Aegina to Methana, continue by road to Kosta on the Argolida coast, park there and cross by small boat or water taxi, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Parking at Kosta is paid and fills up in August.
Do I need to book ahead?
For the Piraeus–Spetses high-speed boat in July and August, yes, especially on Fridays and Sundays. The Aegina–Piraeus leg and the Aegina–Methana car ferry rarely sell out except on holiday weekends. Tickets can be bought online, at agencies in the ports or at the port booths before departure.
