Food tours in Skiathos: what to eat and which tour to book

Skiathos is a small, green island in the Northern Sporades, and most of its eating happens in and around Skiathos Town and along the south-coast road to Koukounaries. The food is Greek island cooking with a Sporades accent: grilled and fried fish, lobster spaghetti (astakomakaronada), grilled octopus with ouzo, and the coiled, fried cheese pie of nearby Skopelos, which many bakeries and tavernas here make too. Taverna menus also cover the standard Greek dishes such as Greek salad, moussaka, gemista (stuffed vegetables) and souvlaki. The old harbour is lined with fish tavernas, and the stepped lanes of the old town above it hide smaller places with views over the water.
Use this page to know what to order and where, with rough 2026 prices in euros. The island is very seasonal: most restaurants open roughly from May to October, and only a few stay open in winter. The tours shown are real GetYourGuide listings, with prices as seen when we checked; confirm the price and meeting point on the booking page before you pay.

Where to eat: markets and neighbourhoods
Old Port (Palio Limani), Skiathos Town
The original harbour west of the Bourtzi peninsula, with fishing boats and a row of fish tavernas and ouzeries on the water. The best-known place on the island for a fish dinner, with prices to match.
Papadiamantis Street
The main pedestrian street running up from the harbour, named after the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, who was born on the island. Bakeries, cafés, souvlaki shops and restaurants line it and the side streets.
Old town lanes above the harbour
Whitewashed stepped lanes on the hill around the Agios Nikolaos clock tower, with small tavernas and restaurants, some with views over the harbour.
Bourtzi and the waterfront
The pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula between the old and new harbours, and the waterfront cafés and bars that face it; good for coffee, drinks and ice cream.
South-coast beaches (Troulos to Koukounaries)
The road west from town passes a string of sandy beaches with beach tavernas serving grilled fish, salads and meze, ending at Koukounaries and its pine forest.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?
Street food
Skiathos has no street-food culture beyond souvlaki and gyros shops, bakeries with pies and koulouri, and beach bars with snacks. Bakeries in town are the cheapest place for breakfast and a picnic.
Sit-down meals
Most meals are in tavernas: share several starters (salad, tzatziki, fried courgette, octopus), then grilled fish or meat with house wine. Fish and lobster are priced by the kilo. Dinner starts around 20:30–21:00. Beach tavernas serve lunch from about 13:00. Restaurants in the old port charge more for the setting.
Cooking classes
Cooking classes are few and seasonal, usually run by individual hosts or villas in summer, teaching Greek dishes such as pies, salads and tzatziki with a meal and wine. Check availability for your dates.
How much to budget for food
| Style | Per person, per day* |
|---|---|
| Budget (street food, markets) | €25–35 (bakery breakfast, pita souvlaki lunch, simple taverna dinner) |
| Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day) | €50–70 (two taverna meals with house wine) |
| Splurge (tasting menus, wine) | €100+ (a fish or lobster dinner at the old port) |
Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free
Vegetarian & vegan: Easy: Greek salad, gemista, briam, fava, horta (greens), cheese pies, fried courgette and aubergine are on almost every menu. Vegan options are fine if you skip feta and ask about butter in pies.
Halal: Halal food is essentially unavailable. Pork is the default meat in souvlaki and gyros, so ask for chicken; fish and vegetable dishes are the practical choices.
Gluten-free: Grilled fish and meat, salads and many oven dishes are naturally gluten-free, but pita, pies and floured fried fish are not. Awareness varies; say 'choris glouteni' and ask about frying.
Food scams and tourist traps to avoid
- Lobster and fish priced per kilo, then a large one weighed and cooked without telling you the total. Ask to see the lobster or fish weighed and confirm the total price before it is cooked.
- Beach sunbeds with a high price or a minimum spend that is only mentioned at the end. Ask the sunbed price and any minimum spend before you sit down.
- Bread and cover charges you did not order, or no receipt. Bread is often charged and is legal if listed; say no if you don't want it. You are entitled to a receipt (apodeixi).
- Waterfront places with photo menus and frozen food aimed at day-trippers. Look for fish of the day and local dishes, and choose places where Greek families eat.

Common questions
Do I need to tip in Skiathos?
Service is not added to the bill in most tavernas. Leaving about 5–10% or rounding up for good service is normal, and cash tips are more likely to reach staff. In cafés and souvlaki shops, small change is enough. A small tip for a good cooking-class host or guide is appreciated but not required.
How much does lobster spaghetti cost?
It depends on the lobster's weight, and many tavernas price it per kilo. A dish for two usually comes to roughly €80–140 in total, sometimes more at the old port in August. Always ask the weight and total price before the lobster is cooked; some places offer a fixed price per portion, which is easier to compare.
Are restaurants open outside summer?
Most tavernas, beach bars and restaurants open from roughly May to October. In winter, a handful of tavernas, cafés and bakeries in Skiathos Town stay open for residents, but beach tavernas close. In April, late October and November, check before going out of your way.
How much should I budget for food per day?
On a budget, about €25–35 covers a bakery breakfast, a pita lunch and a simple taverna dinner. Two taverna meals with house wine come to roughly €50–70 per person. A fish or lobster dinner at the old port can easily reach €60–100 per person.
Where should I eat in Skiathos Town?
For fish, the tavernas at the old port; for cheaper meals, the side streets off Papadiamantis Street and the lanes of the old town on the hill above the harbour. The waterfront facing the Bourtzi is good for coffee, drinks and ice cream. Book ahead for dinner at popular places in July and August.
What time do people eat?
Lunch is roughly 13:00–16:00 and dinner starts around 20:30–21:00 in summer, often later. Tavernas in resorts serve all day, so you can eat earlier. Bakeries open early, and souvlaki shops in town stay open late for the bar crowd.
