Food tours in Key West: what to eat and which tour to book

Key West

Key West is the last island of the Florida Keys, closer to Havana than to Miami, and its food reflects both: Caribbean seafood, Cuban coffee and sandwiches, and Key lime pie, the town's signature dessert. Local fishing boats land pink shrimp, grouper, hogfish, snapper and mahi-mahi, and in season (mid-October to early May) stone crab claws. Conch fritters are on every menu, though the conch itself is imported because harvesting queen conch in Florida has been banned for decades. Duval Street is the busy bar strip; the Historic Seaport, Bahama Village and nearby Stock Island are where much of the better seafood is.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?

Street food

Key West doesn't have a big street-food scene; quick food means Cuban coffee windows, sandwich counters, fritters from seafood shacks, Key lime pie on a stick and food carts at Mallory Square at sunset.

Sit-down meals

Most eating is casual sit-down: open-air seafood shacks, raw bars and island-style restaurants, plus a few upscale places. Expect resort prices. Dinner is from about 18:00; at sunset, waterfront tables fill quickly, so reserve or arrive early.

Cooking classes

Cooking classes are rare; the more common food activities are walking tours that combine tastings with the island's history, occasionally hands-on Key lime pie sessions. Check current schedules, as they change seasonally.

How much to budget for food

StylePer person, per day*
Budget (street food, markets)$45–65 (about €40–58): Cuban coffee and sandwich, a fish taco lunch, a cheap dinner
Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day)$90–140 (about €80–125): seafood lunch and a sit-down dinner with a drink, including tip
Splurge (tasting menus, wine)$200+ (about €175+): stone crab or a fine-dining dinner with wine

Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free

Vegetarian & vegan: Workable: most restaurants have salads, veggie burgers or pasta, and there are a few vegetarian and vegan cafés. Fritters, chowder and many sides contain seafood or meat, and Cuban beans and rice can be cooked with pork.

Halal: Halal food is very limited in Key West. Seafood is the easiest option; Cuban dishes often contain pork.

Gluten-free: Generally good awareness in US restaurants; ask for grilled rather than fried fish, and corn tortillas for tacos. Fritters, Key lime pie crusts and Cuban bread contain wheat.

Common questions

How much should I tip in Key West?

As elsewhere in the US, about 18–20% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, and something for counter service if you like. Some places add an automatic gratuity, especially for groups, so check the bill. Food tour guides usually receive about 15–20% of the tour price.

Is the conch in Key West local?

No. Commercial and recreational harvesting of queen conch has been banned in Florida since the 1980s to protect the species, so conch on Key West menus is imported, mostly from the Caribbean. It's still a classic part of local food, especially fritters and chowder.

When is stone crab season?

Florida's stone crab season runs from 15 October to 1 May. Outside those dates, restaurants shouldn't serve fresh stone crab claws. Prices vary with size (medium to colossal) and the catch, and are usually listed as market price.

Where is the best Key lime pie?

Everyone has a favourite, and many bakeries claim the title. Look for a pale yellow filling made with real Key lime juice, a graham-cracker crust, and whipped cream or meringue on top. Trying a slice from two or three places is part of the fun.

How much should I budget for food per day?

Key West is expensive. Plan roughly $45–65 a day on a budget, $90–140 for two sit-down meals with a drink, and $200 or more for stone crab or fine dining. Florida sales tax plus local taxes and tips add substantially to menu prices.

Do I need to book restaurants?

For sunset dinner on the water and popular restaurants on weekends and in high season (roughly December to April), yes. Casual seafood shacks and bars usually don't take reservations; arrive before sunset or after 20:00 to avoid long waits.
