Food tours in Diani: what to eat and which tour to book

Diani

Diani is a long white-sand beach on Kenya's south coast, about 30 km south of Mombasa, and its food is Swahili coastal cooking: rice dishes such as pilau and biryani spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and cumin, fish and prawns cooked in coconut, mahamri (cardamom-scented fried bread) with tea at breakfast, and grilled mishkaki skewers in the evening, alongside Kenyan staples such as chapati, ugali, sukuma wiki and nyama choma. The Diani Beach Road is lined with resort restaurants, beach bars and international places; cheaper local food is in Ukunda, the town on the main Mombasa–Lunga Lunga road where most residents live and shop.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?

Street food

Street food is concentrated in Ukunda: mahamri and chai in the morning, grilled mishkaki, roasted maize and cassava chips with chilli and lime in the evening. Along the beach, vendors sell fruit and coconuts.

Sit-down meals

Most visitors eat at resort restaurants, beach bars and international places on the beach road, which are much more expensive. Local restaurants in Ukunda serve pilau, biryani, fish and chapati cheaply. Swahili cafés often close early in the evening, especially during Ramadan.

Cooking classes

Swahili cooking classes in Diani are usually run by guesthouses, local women's groups or small operators and teach dishes such as pilau, fish in coconut, chapati and mahamri. They are informal and often in a home kitchen.

How much to budget for food

StylePer person, per day*
Budget (street food, markets)KSh 1,500–2,500 (about €10–17: local food in Ukunda)
Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day)KSh 4,000–7,000 (about €27–47: beach road restaurants and a drink)
Splurge (tasting menus, wine)KSh 10,000+ (about €67+: seafood dinner at a resort or beach restaurant with wine)

Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free

Vegetarian & vegan: Possible. Bean stews (maharagwe), sukuma wiki, chapati, vegetable curries, coconut lentils and fruit are common. Pilau and biryani usually contain meat; ask for vegetable versions. Resort restaurants offer vegetarian options.

Halal: Easy. The Kenyan coast has a large Muslim community, and most local restaurants serving meat are halal. Pork is rare outside resorts and international restaurants.

Gluten-free: Rice, ugali (maize), grilled fish and meat, and fresh fruit are naturally gluten-free. Chapati, mahamri and maandazi are wheat-based. Awareness in local places is low, so keep requests simple.

Common questions

What should I eat on the Kenyan coast?

Start with pilau and biryani, fish or prawns in coconut sauce, mahamri with spiced tea for breakfast, and mishkaki skewers in the evening. Try nyama choma (grilled meat) with ugali at a local grill, and drink madafu (fresh coconut). Ukunda town has the cheapest and most local versions.

Is street food safe in Diani?

Generally yes, if it is cooked hot in front of you. Be careful with raw salads and unpeeled fruit at stalls, and avoid tap water and ice from unknown sources; drink bottled or filtered water. Busy stalls with high turnover are safest.

Do I need to tip in Diani?

Tipping is appreciated. In restaurants about 10% is common unless a service charge is already added. Guides, boat crews and drivers usually receive a tip at the end of a trip. Cash in shillings is best, though M-Pesa transfers are also common.

How much should I budget for food per day?

Eating local food in Ukunda, about KSh 1,500–2,500 (€10–17) a day is enough. Beach road restaurants with a drink raise that to roughly KSh 4,000–7,000 (€27–47). Resort and seafood restaurants with wine cost more.

Can I pay by card in Diani?

Resorts, supermarkets and many beach road restaurants take cards. Small local places, stalls and markets are cash or M-Pesa only. Carry some shillings in small notes. If a card terminal offers to charge in your home currency, choose shillings for a better rate.

Does Ramadan affect eating in Diani?

Yes, in local areas. Many Muslim-run restaurants in Ukunda close during the day and open in the evening after sunset, when special foods appear. Resort and beach road restaurants keep normal hours. Eat discreetly in public in town during the day out of respect.
