Food tours in Algarve: what to eat and which tour to book

The Algarve is a coastline, not a single city, and the food changes as you move along it. In the east, around Olhão, Fuzeta and Tavira, the Ria Formosa lagoon supplies clams, cockles, oysters and razor clams, and Santa Luzia calls itself the octopus capital. In the middle, Portimão grills sardines by the river and the village of Guia near Albufeira is known across Portugal for piri-piri chicken. On the wild west coast around Aljezur and Sagres, goose barnacles (percebes) and sweet potatoes take over. Inland, Loulé and the hill villages make almond and fig sweets and the strong medronho brandy. The resort strips of Albufeira and Praia da Rocha are where food is most generic.

What to eat in Algarve
| Dish | What it is | Where to eat it | Typical price* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cataplana cataplana de marisco / amêijoas na cataplana | Seafood, often clams, prawns and sometimes pork, steamed with onion, peppers, tomato, garlic, wine and herbs in a hinged copper pan that is opened at the table. Usually for two people. | Seafood restaurants in Olhão, Tavira, Ferragudo and Lagos; avoid places that only display it on a picture board on the beachfront strip. | roughly €35–60 for a pan for two, depending on the seafood |
| Grilled sardines sardinhas assadas | Whole sardines grilled over charcoal with coarse salt, eaten with boiled potatoes, salad and bread. Best in summer, when the fish are fattest. | The riverside restaurants near the old bridge in Portimão and simple grills in fishing towns such as Olhão and Quarteira. | about €10–15 a plate |
| Piri-piri chicken frango da Guia / frango piri-piri | Small, flattened chicken grilled over charcoal and brushed with chilli oil; you can usually ask for it mild and add sauce yourself. | Churrasqueiras in the village of Guia near Albufeira, and grill houses across the region. | roughly €9–14 for a half or whole chicken with chips |
| Octopus polvo (polvo à lagareiro, arroz de polvo, salada de polvo) | Octopus roasted with plenty of olive oil and garlic, cooked into a wet rice, or served cold as a salad with onion and coriander. | Santa Luzia near Tavira, where octopus fishing with traps is the local trade, and restaurants in Tavira. | roughly €16–24 a main |
| Seafood rice arroz de marisco / arroz de lingueirão | Soupy rice cooked with mixed shellfish or with razor clams from the lagoon, served straight from the pot. | Restaurants in Olhão, Fuzeta and Cabanas de Tavira on the Ria Formosa. | roughly €18–30 per person, often for two minimum |
| Goose barnacles percebes | Barnacles picked by hand from wave-battered rocks on the west coast, boiled briefly in seawater and eaten by twisting off the skin. Expensive because harvesting them is dangerous. | Seafood restaurants and cervejarias in Sagres, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur. | sold by weight; roughly €8–15 for a small dish, much more for a full portion |
| Almond and fig sweets doces de amêndoa, Dom Rodrigo, morgado de figo | Marzipan shaped into fruits and animals, egg-yolk threads wrapped in foil (Dom Rodrigo), and fig-and-almond cakes from the inland hills. | Pastelarias in Loulé, Tavira and Lagos, and stalls at the Loulé market. | about €1.50–3 a piece |
| Medronho aguardente de medronho | Strong clear brandy distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree, made in the Monchique hills; often offered at the end of a meal. | Bars and restaurants in Monchique and small producers in the serra; sold in shops across the region. | about €2–4 a glass |
Where to eat: markets and neighbourhoods
Olhão market halls (Mercados de Olhão)
Two red-brick market buildings on the waterfront, one for fish and one for fruit and vegetables. The fish hall shows what the boats and lagoon brought in that morning. On Saturdays an outdoor market with farmers and stalls spreads along the waterfront.
Loulé Municipal Market
Restored covered market in a Moorish-style building in the centre of Loulé, selling cheese, cured meats, honey, almonds, figs, fish and produce. On Saturdays a large outdoor market fills the surrounding streets.
Portimão riverside
The traditional sardine grills along the Arade river near the old bridge, close to the fishing harbour.
Tavira and Santa Luzia
Tavira is a working town with good everyday restaurants and pastry shops; Santa Luzia, a few minutes away, is the place for octopus.
Guia (Albufeira)
Inland village with a row of churrasqueiras grilling piri-piri chicken; a short drive from the Albufeira resorts but very different food.
West coast: Sagres, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur
Barnacles, fish caught off the cape, and sweet potatoes from the sandy fields around Aljezur.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?
Street food
The Algarve has little true street food. The casual options are bifanas (pork sandwiches) and pastries at cafés, grilled chicken to take away from churrasqueiras, and snack bars at markets. Summer festivals, including the seafood festival in Olhão in August, are the closest thing to food stalls.
Sit-down meals
Most good eating is sit-down: a simple grill or seafood restaurant with a short daily list of fish. Lunch is from about 12:30 and dinner from about 19:30–20:00, earlier than in Spain. Many restaurants close one day a week and some on the coast close for part of the winter.
Cooking classes
Cooking classes are spread across the region rather than in one city, often in a country house or a small town, and usually cover cataplana, fish or petiscos (small plates) with wine. Some include a morning visit to Olhão or Loulé market. Check where the class actually takes place, as transfers are not always included.
How much to budget for food
| Style | Per person, per day* |
|---|---|
| Budget (street food, markets) | €25–35 (café breakfast, bifana or chicken lunch, simple grill dinner) |
| Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day) | €50–70 (two sit-down meals with house wine) |
| Splurge (tasting menus, wine) | €120+ (cataplana or shellfish for two, or a fine-dining restaurant in a resort) |
Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free
Vegetarian & vegan: Harder than the produce suggests. Menus are built on fish and meat, and soups often use meat stock. Ask for a salad, grilled vegetables, migas or bean dishes; vegetarian and vegan cafés exist in Lagos, Faro and Tavira. Say 'sou vegetariano/vegetariana' and check what 'sem carne' means for each dish.
Halal: Halal-certified restaurants are rare outside a few Indian, Nepali and Middle Eastern places in Albufeira, Portimão and Faro. Fish and seafood restaurants are the easy option; note that wine is used in many sauces, including cataplana.
Gluten-free: Grilled fish, sardines, chicken and octopus with potatoes are naturally gluten-free. Bread and the couvert, fried items and many pastries are not. Awareness is better in resort areas; 'sem glúten' is the phrase to use.
Food scams and tourist traps to avoid
- The couvert: bread, olives, butter, cheese or pâté placed on the table without asking, then charged on the bill. It is not free, but you can send it back. If you don't touch it you should not pay for it; check the bill.
- Fresh fish and shellfish priced per kilo, then a large fish or a big plate of barnacles served with a total far above what you expected. Ask the price per kilo and the approximate weight before it is cooked, and ask to see it weighed.
- Picture-menu restaurants with touts on the Albufeira old-town strip and at Praia da Rocha, serving frozen seafood at fresh prices. Eat in Olhão, Tavira, Ferragudo or inland villages, or walk a few streets away from the beachfront.
- 'Fresh' sardines in winter, which are usually frozen. Sardine season is roughly June to September; outside it, order other fish or ask whether they are frozen.

Common questions
Do I have to pay for the bread and olives?
Only if you eat them. In Portugal the couvert (bread, butter, olives, sometimes cheese or pâté) is placed on the table before you order and is charged per item or per person, usually a few euros. You can politely send it back. If it stays untouched, you should not be charged for it, so check the bill if it has been added anyway.
When is the Olhão market open?
The fish and produce halls on the Olhão waterfront open Monday to Saturday in the morning, roughly from 7:00 until around lunchtime. Saturday is the best day, because an outdoor farmers' and general market sets up alongside the halls. Sunday is closed. Hours can change by season and on public holidays, so check current hours before you drive over.
When are sardines in season?
Roughly June to September, with the best fish in July and August. That is when the riverside grills in Portimão and festivals across the region serve them fresh. Outside the season many restaurants still list sardines, but they are usually frozen. In winter it is better to order whatever fish the restaurant has fresh that day.
Do I need to tip in the Algarve?
Tipping is appreciated but not expected the way it is in the US. Rounding up or leaving about 5–10% for good table service is normal; at cafés people leave small change. Service is not normally added to the bill. On a food tour or cooking class, a tip of a few euros per person for a good guide is welcome but optional.
Which town is best to base myself in for food?
For seafood and markets, the east is strongest: Olhão and Tavira have working markets, lagoon shellfish and everyday restaurants at fair prices. Lagos and Ferragudo are good in the west, with easy trips to Sagres for barnacles. Albufeira and Praia da Rocha have the most restaurants but also the most generic tourist menus.
How much should I budget for food per day?
On a budget, about €25–35 covers coffee and pastry, a sandwich or grilled chicken at lunch and a simple fish or meat dinner. A comfortable day with two sit-down meals and house wine is roughly €50–70. Shellfish sold by weight and a cataplana for two can push dinner alone above €60–80. Resorts are pricier in July and August.
