Why visit Xylokastro?

Xylokastro is a seaside town on the Corinthian Gulf in Corinthia, around 120 kilometres from Athens, known for its long beach and the Pefkias, a pine forest that runs right down to the sand. That combination of shade and sea makes it one of the most pleasant summer spots close to the capital, popular with Greek families who have been coming for generations.

The promenade fills with cafés and ice-cream shops in the evening, and the beach is clean and easy, with the mountains of Central Greece visible across the gulf. Inland the landscape changes quickly: the road climbs past vineyards to mountain villages such as Trikala Korinthias on the slopes of Ziria, a winter destination with stone guesthouses and tavernas serving grilled meat. Within half an hour you can be at Lake Stymfalia, the Feneos plateau or ancient Sikyon, and Ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal are an easy drive. Xylokastro is a calm, unpretentious base for a beach holiday with plenty of short day trips.
