Why visit Valparaiso?

Valparaíso is a historic port city on the central Pacific coast of Chile, about two hours by road from Santiago. Its colourful houses are spread across steep hills that rise above the bay. The historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city is home to the Chilean National Congress.

Ride one of the old funiculars, such as the Ascensor Reina Victoria or the Ascensor Artilleria, up to the hillside neighbourhoods. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion are known for their street art, viewpoints and narrow stairways. La Sebastiana, one of Pablo Neruda's houses, is now a museum with wide views over the harbour. The Palacio Baburizza on Paseo Yugoslavo houses the city's fine arts museum. Down by the water, Plaza Sotomayor and Muelle Prat are the starting points for short boat rides around the port. The neighbouring city of Viña del Mar has beaches and gardens, and the Casablanca Valley wineries are an easy day trip. Try a chorrillana, a large plate of fries topped with meat, onions and egg, or seafood empanadas.
