Why visit Puerto Natales?

Puerto Natales is a small town on the Ultima Esperanza Sound in the Magallanes Region of Chilean Patagonia. It is the main base for visiting Torres del Paine National Park, one of the best-known protected areas in South America. The town has a relaxed waterfront with views of snow-capped mountains across the fjord.

Torres del Paine is famous for the granite towers of the Base de las Torres, the Cuernos del Paine and the blue waters of Lago Pehoe. The multi-day W Trek links the park's main highlights, while day visitors can see much of it by road and on short walks. Boats on Lago Grey take you close to the face of Grey Glacier. Near town, the Cueva del Milodon is a large cave where remains of a giant ground sloth were found. Boat trips along the fjord reach the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. Patagonian lamb roasted over an open fire is the classic local meal, and king crab is common on menus. Strong winds are normal here, so bring windproof clothing.
