Why visit Trakai?

Trakai is a small lakeside town about 28 kilometres west of Vilnius and one of the most popular day trips in Lithuania. Set among a chain of lakes and forests, it was once a capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the whole area is protected as Trakai Historical National Park.

The star attraction is Trakai Island Castle, a red-brick Gothic fortress standing on an island in Lake Galvė, reached by wooden footbridges. Built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and linked with Grand Duke Vytautas, it was restored in the twentieth century and now houses a museum of the castle's history. On the peninsula, you can explore the ruins of the older Peninsula Castle. Trakai is also the heart of Lithuania's Karaim community, a Turkic-speaking people brought here from Crimea in the late fourteenth century. Along Karaimų Street you can see their typical wooden houses with three windows facing the street, visit the kenesa, their prayer house, and taste kibinai, the crescent-shaped pastries filled with meat. Across the lake, Užutrakis Manor has elegant gardens and calm views. In summer, boats, kayaks and paddle boards are available to hire on the lakes. May to September is the best time to visit.
