Why visit Kaunas?

Kaunas is Lithuania's second city, set where the Neris and Nemunas rivers meet, and was the country's temporary capital between the two world wars. That era left a remarkable collection of modernist architecture that earned it the European Heritage Label, and the city was a European Capital of Culture in 2022.

The Old Town has the red-brick Kaunas Castle, Town Hall Square and its white Town Hall, and the Gothic House of Perkūnas. Laisvės alėja, a long pedestrian avenue, leads to the blue-domed Church of St Michael the Archangel. Ride the historic Žaliakalnis funicular for views, and visit the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, devoted to the painter-composer, and the quirky Devils' Museum. Outside the centre, the Ninth Fort is a sobering memorial. Pažaislis Monastery, a Baroque gem on the Kaunas Reservoir, is a short trip away. Eat cepelinai, cold beetroot soup šaltibarščiai and kibinai.
