Why visit Abisko?

Abisko is a tiny village in Swedish Lapland, about two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, on the shore of the long lake Torneträsk. It sits at the edge of Abisko National Park, founded in 1909 and one of the first national parks in Europe. Thanks to the mountains around it, the area often has clearer skies than the rest of the region, which has made Abisko one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights.

From September to March, a chairlift takes visitors up Mount Nuolja to the Aurora Sky Station, where you can wait for the lights high above the valley. In winter you can also try dog sledding, snowshoeing and meet Sámi reindeer herders. In summer the sun does not set from late May to mid-July, and the park becomes a hiking area: Abisko is the northern start of the Kungsleden, the King's Trail, and an easy path follows the Abiskojåkka canyon from the village. The U-shaped valley of Lapporten, a symbol of Lapland, is visible from many points. Abisko is on the railway line between Kiruna and Narvik, so you can arrive by train. The best time to visit is February to March for the aurora and June to September for hiking.
