Why visit Trabzon?

Trabzon is the main city of Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast, an ancient port once known as Trebizond, capital of a Byzantine empire in the Middle Ages. Behind it rise the green Pontic Mountains, with tea plantations, forested valleys and alpine meadows, a very different side of Turkey from the Mediterranean coast.

In the city, the Hagia Sophia of Trabzon, a 13th-century Byzantine church, preserves remarkable frescoes, and the Atatürk Pavilion is a white villa set in gardens above town. Meydan Park is the lively central square. The highlight is outside the city: the Sumela Monastery, built into a sheer cliff face high above the Altındere Valley, an unforgettable sight. Uzungöl, a lake village surrounded by forested mountains, is a popular trip, and the high pastures (yayla) of the Kaçkar Mountains offer hiking. The cuisine is based on Black Sea anchovies (hamsi), cornbread, and kuymak, a rich cheese and cornmeal dish.
