Why visit Ephesus?

Ephesus, near the town of Selçuk on Turkey's Aegean coast, is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Greek colonists and later the capital of the Roman province of Asia, it is famous above all for the Library of Celsus, whose two-storey façade is one of the most photographed ruins in the world.

Walk the marble Curetes Street past the Temple of Hadrian and public latrines to the Great Theatre, which once seated around 24,000 people. The Terrace Houses, covered by a protective roof, preserve frescoes and mosaics from wealthy Roman homes and are well worth the extra ticket. In Selçuk, see the Ephesus Archaeological Museum, the single standing column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders, and the Basilica of St John. The House of the Virgin Mary is nearby on Mount Koressos, and the hill village of Şirince is known for its fruit wines. Kuşadası port is 20 kilometres away.
