Why visit Tofo?

Tofo is a relaxed beach town on the Inhambane Peninsula in southern Mozambique, facing the warm Indian Ocean. It is one of the country's favourite spots for divers, snorkellers and surfers, while keeping a laid-back, barefoot feel. Long sandy beaches, palm trees and small local markets make it easy to slow down for a few days.

Tofo is best known for its marine life. Whale sharks feed in the plankton-rich waters off the coast, and boat trips called ocean safaris let you snorkel beside them. Divers come for the offshore reefs, where manta rays visit cleaning stations, along with turtles and many reef fish. From about July to October, humpback whales pass along the coast and can often be seen from boats or even the beach. Nearby Tofinho has rocky points with good surf, and the quiet colonial town of Inhambane, with its old cathedral and waterfront, is a short drive away, as is the calm bay of Barra. Most travellers fly to Inhambane airport and transfer by road, or travel by bus from Maputo. The best time to visit is May to November, the drier and cooler season, which also matches the whale season. Before you go, check your government's current travel advice for Mozambique.
