Why visit Alexandria?

Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, was the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and one of the great cities of the ancient world, home to the Lighthouse of Pharos and the Great Library. Today it is Egypt's second city, stretched along the Mediterranean with a long seafront Corniche and a faded cosmopolitan charm.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern library and cultural centre opened in 2002, recalls its ancient predecessor. The Citadel of Qaitbay was built in the 15th century on the site of the Pharos lighthouse. Go underground in the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, which mix Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles, and see Pompey's Pillar and the Roman amphitheatre at Kom El Dikka. The city has a long Greek heritage: the poet Constantine Cavafy lived here, and his apartment is now a small museum. Stroll the Montazah Palace gardens and eat grilled fish and seafood along the Corniche, with old cafés such as those once frequented by writers and artists.
