Why visit Tainan?

Tainan is Taiwan's oldest city and was the capital of the island for more than two centuries, under the Dutch, the Kingdom of Tungning founded by Koxinga, and the Qing dynasty. Today it is known as the island's cultural capital and its food capital, with hundreds of temples and generations-old snack shops.

Visit Fort Provintia (Chihkan Tower) and Anping Fort, both first built by the Dutch in the 17th century, and the Anping Tree House, an old warehouse swallowed by banyan roots. The Confucius Temple, founded in 1665, was Taiwan's first school. The Grand Matsu Temple and the Official God of War Temple are among the most important temples on the island. Wander the narrow lanes of Shennong Street and the Blueprint Culture and Creative Park, and see the restored Hayashi Department Store from the Japanese era. Tainan's food is famously a little sweet: try danzai noodles, milkfish soup, beef soup at breakfast, shrimp rolls and coffin bread.
