Why visit Kaohsiung?

Kaohsiung is Taiwan's main port and second-largest city, on the island's southwest coast. Once an industrial harbour, it has turned old warehouses and riverbanks into art districts and parks, and it has a warm climate, good beaches nearby and a relaxed pace.

The Pier-2 Art Center fills old harbour warehouses with installations, galleries and shops, and the Love River is lined with walking paths and cafes. At Lotus Pond, visit the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, where you walk in through the dragon's mouth and out through the tiger's. Formosa Boulevard metro station has the Dome of Light, one of the largest glass artworks in the world. Take the short ferry to Cijin Island for seafood, a lighthouse and a black-sand beach, and climb Shoushan for views and wild macaques. Fo Guang Shan, a huge Buddhist monastery with the Buddha Museum, is outside the city. The night markets of Liuhe and Ruifeng are good for street food such as papaya milk, oyster omelettes and grilled squid.
