Why visit Jiufen?

Jiufen is a former gold-mining town on the mountainside above the northeast coast of Taiwan, about an hour from Taipei. It boomed after gold was found in the 1890s, faded when the mines closed, and was revived as a destination after it featured in the film A City of Sadness, with its steep lanes, red lanterns and teahouses looking out over the sea.

Walk Jiufen Old Street, a narrow covered lane of food stalls selling taro balls, peanut ice-cream rolls and fish balls, and climb the Shuqi Road stairs, lined with lanterns and teahouses such as A-Mei Tea House. Come late in the afternoon to see the lanterns lit at dusk, ideally on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Nearby Jinguashi has the Gold Museum, a mine tunnel and a huge gold ingot, and the Golden Waterfall. Hike Keelung Mountain for a view of the coast, and combine the trip with Shifen, where people release sky lanterns over the old Pingxi railway line. Jiufen is cooler and often misty.
