Why visit Stemnitsa?

Stemnitsa is a stone-built village in the mountains of Gortynia in Arcadia, set on a steep slope with views across forested valleys. It has a long tradition in metalwork and silversmithing, still taught at its school of jewellery and silversmithing, and its folk museum shows how the village lived and worked.

The main reason to come is the walking. Stemnitsa sits on the Menalon Trail, a waymarked long-distance hiking route through the Arcadian mountains, and the section down into the Lousios Gorge is the most spectacular, passing the monasteries of Prodromos, built into the cliff face, and Nea Philosophou. Neighbouring Dimitsana, a short drive away, has the Open-Air Water Power Museum, and rafting operators run trips on the Lousios and Alfeios rivers. In the evening, eat hearty mountain food — slow-cooked meat, wild greens pies and local cheese — in tavernas around the plane-shaded square. In winter the village is a cosy fireplace escape.
