Why visit Sparta?

Modern Sparta is a calm, orderly town in the Eurotas valley, laid out on a grid in the 19th century beneath the snow-capped ridge of Taygetos. Its name carries the weight of the ancient warrior state, and you can walk among the remains of ancient Sparta's acropolis and theatre at the north end of town, past the statue of King Leonidas.

The real highlight is five kilometres away: Mystras, the UNESCO-listed Byzantine city that climbs a steep hillside with churches, monasteries, palaces and a Frankish castle at the top. Its frescoes are among the finest late Byzantine art anywhere. Back in town, the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil explains the crop that covers the whole valley, and the tavernas serve Laconian specialities such as syglino, smoked pork, and fresh local oil. Sparta is also the natural gateway to the Mani peninsula and to Monemvasia, so it works well as a base for exploring the southern Peloponnese.
