Why visit Siwa?

Siwa is a remote oasis in Egypt's Western Desert, near the Libyan border, home to a Berber-speaking community with its own language and traditions. Palm groves, olive orchards and salt lakes surrounded by sand dunes make it feel far from the rest of Egypt.

In the centre stand the ruins of Shali, an old fortress town built of kershef, a mixture of salt and mud, which slowly melted after rare heavy rains. The Temple of the Oracle of Amun is where Alexander the Great is said to have consulted the oracle in 331 BC. Bathe in Cleopatra's Spring, a natural pool, and float in the salt lakes, where the water is so dense you rise to the surface. Climb Mountain of the Dead, with its rock-cut tombs, for views at sunset, and take a 4x4 trip into the Great Sand Sea for sandboarding and hot springs among the dunes. Siwa's dates and olives are famous. Reaching it takes a long drive from Marsa Matruh or Cairo.
