Why visit Shirakawa-go?

Shirakawa-go is a mountain village area in Gifu Prefecture, in central Japan, set in a remote river valley among the Japanese Alps. It is famous for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with steep thatched roofs designed to cope with heavy snow. Together with nearby Gokayama, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most visitors explore Ogimachi, the largest village, where dozens of thatched farmhouses stand among rice fields. Some houses, such as the Wada House, are open as museums and show how families lived and raised silkworms in the attics. The Shiroyama viewpoint above the village offers the classic panorama of the thatched roofs. In winter, the village is covered in deep snow, and on special evenings the houses are lit up, creating a fairy-tale scene. A few farmhouses offer overnight stays, a rare chance to experience traditional rural life. Shirakawa-go is usually combined with Takayama and Kanazawa, both reached by bus.
