Why visit Ishigaki?

Ishigaki is the main island of the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa, Japan's far south-west, closer to Taiwan than to Tokyo. It has a subtropical climate, coral reefs, white beaches and mangroves, and is the gateway to the other Yaeyama islands such as Taketomi and Iriomote.

Kabira Bay, with turquoise water and small green islands, is the island's most famous view; swimming is not allowed there, but glass-bottom boats show the coral. Snorkel and dive at sites known for manta rays, and swim at beaches such as Yonehara and Sukuji. Climb to the Tamatorizaki viewpoint and the Hirakubozaki lighthouse at the northern tip. Ferries go to Taketomi, a small island of traditional red-tiled houses and water-buffalo carts, and to Iriomote, mostly covered by jungle and mangroves, for kayaking and waterfalls. The island's skies are dark enough for stargazing. Try Ishigaki beef, Okinawa soba and sea grapes.
