Why visit Kamakura?

Kamakura is a seaside town about an hour south of Tokyo, which was Japan's political capital in the 12th to 14th centuries under the Kamakura shogunate. Today it is known for its many temples and shrines in wooded hills, its Great Buddha and its beaches, and it is a popular day trip from Tokyo.

See the Kotoku-in Great Buddha, a bronze statue more than 11 metres high that has sat in the open air since a tsunami destroyed its hall in the 15th century. Hase-dera temple has gardens, caves and a view over the bay, and is famous for hydrangeas in June. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the town's main shrine, reached along Komachi-dori shopping street. Hokokuji has a bamboo grove with a tea house, and the Zen temples of Kita-Kamakura, such as Engakuji and Kenchoji, are among the oldest in Japan. Hiking trails link temples across the hills. Ride the Enoden train along the coast to Enoshima island. Try shirasu (whitebait) on rice.
