Why visit El Calafate?

El Calafate is a town on the southern shore of Lago Argentino in Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia. It is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town takes its name from the calafate, a thorny shrub with dark blue berries that grows across the region.

The main reason to visit is the Perito Moreno Glacier, where a network of walkways faces the ice wall and you can watch large blocks break off into the lake. Boat trips sail close to the glacier front, and guided ice-trekking tours walk on the glacier itself. Other boat excursions on Lago Argentino visit the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers. In town, the Glaciarium museum explains how glaciers form and change. The Laguna Nimez Nature Reserve on the lakeshore is a good place to see flamingos and other birds. Patagonian lamb is the signature dish, and calafate berries appear in jams, ice cream and liqueurs. Traditional estancias outside town offer a look at sheep-farming life on the steppe.
