Why visit El Chalten?

El Chaltén is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia, inside the northern section of Los Glaciares National Park. It lies at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, two of the most famous peaks in the Andes. The village is known as Argentina's national trekking capital, and many trails start right from its streets.

The most popular day hike leads to Laguna de los Tres, a glacial lake directly below the granite spires of Fitz Roy. Another classic trail follows the valley to Laguna Torre and its view of Cerro Torre. Shorter walks reach Laguna Capri, the Mirador de los Condores and the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall. A road north of the village leads to Lago del Desierto, surrounded by forest and mountains. Climbers from around the world come here to attempt the steep granite walls of the area. After a day on the trails, the village offers hearty Patagonian food and locally brewed craft beer. Weather changes quickly, so carry layers and rain gear on every hike.
