Why visit Prespa?

The Prespa Lakes sit high in the mountains where Greece, Albania and North Macedonia meet. Great Prespa is shared by all three countries, while Small Prespa lies mostly in Greece, and together they form a protected national park of reed beds, islands and quiet villages.

Prespa is home to the largest breeding colony of Dalmatian pelicans in the world, and great white pelicans nest here too. On the island of Agios Achillios, reached by a floating footbridge, stand the ruins of a 10th-century basilica built by Tsar Samuel. In the fishing village of Psarades on Great Prespa, boats take visitors to hermitages and Byzantine frescoes painted on the cliffs above the water. Stone villages such as Agios Germanos have traditional houses and old churches. The area is known for its giant beans, the fasolia gigantes Prespon, served in every taverna, and lake trout. It is remote, peaceful and best explored slowly.
