Why visit Patras?

Patras is Greece's third-largest city and the main port for ferries to Patras, but it deserves more than a quick transit. It is a university city with a lively café culture, and it hosts the Patras Carnival, the biggest in Greece, when the whole city turns out for weeks of parades and parties before Lent.

Start at the Basilica of Saint Andrew, one of the largest churches in Greece, built where tradition says the apostle was martyred. Climb the steps to the Castle of Patras for views over the city and the gulf, then visit the Roman Odeon, still used for summer performances, and the modern Archaeological Museum with its fine Roman mosaics. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, spans the gulf just outside town. Head inland to the Achaia Clauss winery, founded in the 19th century and home of Mavrodaphne wine, and eat seafood and grilled meat in the tavernas around Trion Navarchon Square.
